The Herriot Way:
It is named after the famous vet, James Herriot, who lived and worked in the
Yorkshire Dales for many years.
This route is supposed to be a collection of his favourite walks and places.


James Herriot:
James Alfred Wight, who wrote under the pseudonym of James Herriot, was
one of the most popular writers of the twentieth century.
His books, a series of stories based on his experiences as a young veterinary
surgeon working among the farming community of North Yorkshire, sold in
their millions throughout the world.
Their great success spawned a BBC television series,  All Creatures Great..., which enjoyed global success in the late 1970s and early 80s.

Begin- en eindpunt:
Aysgarth.


Lengte en tijdsduur: 84 km
• Als je de Herriot Way met een lichte dagrugzak loopt , terwijl je de
.. hoofdbagage laat bezorgen, kun je het traject in 4 dagen doen
.. (zie verderop bij Van dag tot dag).
• Ga je echter met trekkingrugzak en tent dan heb je zo'n indeling niet
.. nodig. Je bent dan vrij in doen en laten en kunt 's avonds altijd wel een
.. tentplek vinden.
.. Je hebt dan wel 1 tot 2 dagen méér nodig, omdat je met een trekking-
.. rugzak minder kilometers per dag aflegt.

• Swaledale, een van die mooie dalen in de Dales.
• De Yorkshire Dales heeft karakteristieke rich green valleys and dry stone walls (stapelmuren).
• Rechtsboven zie je het unenclosed (niet omheind ) heather moor.

Beste periode:
Juni, juli en augustus is beste periode.
Mei is nog tamelijk koud.
September is minder geschikt om te kamperen, want:
1. 's morgens droogt je tent niet meer op voor 10.00 uur, zodat je ze nat
... moet inpakken.
2. koude dagen behoren in september al tot de mogelijkheden.
3. 's avonds is het dan al vroeg donker.

Sites komen en gaan; dat valt niet bij te houden.
Googel daarom ook een keer naar herriot way tours en bekijk de eerste
10 (evt. 20) resultaten. Daar zitten de belangrijkste sites wel tussen.

 1.  Aysgarth ― Hawes ....... 21 km ....... Lichte wandeling
The route heads north out of the village, down to the River Ure, which it follows closely along wide meadows and a disused railway track until
turning into Askrigg.
(This is the village that was used to film the James Herriot TV series.)
From Askrigg the route travels down the Wensleydale valley, through
lush green fields, down narrow, secluded lanes to the village of
Hardraw with its famous waterfall and then into Hawes,
the largest town on the route and the highest market town in Yorkshire.

 2. Hawes ― Keld ....... 21km ....... Lichte wandeling
Leaving Hawes the Way climbs up the side of Great Shunner Fell, the
third highest mountain in Yorkshire, following the mostly paved footpath
of the Pennine Way, to the summit shelter with wide-ranging views
across the surrounding dales and hills and then down into Thwaite.
From here the path skirts the lower slopes of Kisdon and then drops
down again into the tiny settlement of Keld.

 3. Keld ― Grinton .......21 km ....... Lichte wandeling
Beyond Keld the path says goodbye to rolling green fells and fields and
climbs into the bleak and blasted landscape of Gunnerside Moor, chan-
ged forever by the lead mining industry that ranged across the moors for
decades.
The heather however, remains a glorious site despite the industry and
now supports the new 'industry' of grouse shooting.
The Way soon returns to the valley and the wonderful River Swale at Healaugh, before the short walk through fields into Reeth and then to
Grinton Lodge.

 4.  Grinton ― Aysgarth ......21 km ...... Lichte wandeling
Grinton Lodge sits right on the edge of the moors and a short hop from
the hostel takes the path into the glorious heather and open moorland
around Gibbon Hill and then along the rough but easy Apedale Road.
After Dent’s Houses the path drops steeply down to the village of
Castle Bolton and the atmospheric remains of the castle.
More fields and back lanes lead to the very impressive falls at Aysgarth
 and then to the village itself.

komen het beste overeen met mijn wandelingen.
Je maakt dan niet te veel hoogtemeters en wandeluren per dag.
